Blood Thinner Injury Lawsuits
Pradaxa, Xarelto, Eliquis
Traditionally, anticoagulant drugs are prescribed to help reduce blood clots that can cause heart attacks, stroke, or cardiovascular death. Warfarin (marketed as Coumadin®) has been used for half a century. However, three next-generation anticoagulants—Pradaxa®, Xarelto®, and Eliquis®—have been approved in the last ten years by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Each of these newer drugs has been linked to an increased risk of severe bleeding. And unlike warfarin, two of these blood thinners, Xarelto and Eliquis, have no counteracting drugs to stop bleeding once it begins, which may lead to severe injuries or even death.
If you or someone you love suffered severe bleeding or other injuries after taking Pradaxa, Xarelto, or Eliquis, call our drug injury lawyers today. Pradaxa® Bleeding Lawsuit Settlements
Pradaxa (dabigatran), a prescription blood-thinning drug, was approved by the FDA in 2010 and is used to reduce stroke risk in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AFib) patients. Four years later, the FDA published a study that revealed patients age 65 and older taking Pradaxa faced a higher risk of gastrointestinal bleeding than patients taking warfarin.
Due to these significant risks, thousands of victims and their families have brought lawsuits against Pradaxa manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim, leading to settlements totaling more than $650 million to date.
Xarelto® Bleeding Risks
Despite being approved for use by the FDA in 2011, Xarelto (rivaroxaban) has been known to:
- Triple the risk of major bleeding among patients suffering from Acute Coronary Syndrome.
- Nearly triple the risk of major bleeding among acutely ill patients taking blood thinners to reduce the risk of blood clots.
- Double the risk of severe bleeding among patients undergoing hip surgery.
Patients taking Xarelto may also face an increased risk of developing blood clots or suffering a stroke.
Eliquis® Severe Bleeding Threat
Approved by the FDA after the other two, Eliquis presents many of the same severe bleeding risks as Pradaxa and Xarelto. In addition, patients taking Eliquis may suffer from:
- Blood clots
- Gastrointestinal bleeding
- Hemorrhagic stroke (brain bleeding)
- Intracranial bleeding (bleeding in the skull)
